About the project
As part of Atlanta to the Atlantic, Rachel and Sarah kayaked 450 miles from the tributaries of the South River in Atlanta to where the waters meet the Atlantic Ocean at Sapelo Island. On their journey, they engaged with the communities living along the river as well as the natural world around them. Rachel and Sarah shared their adventures through daily livestreams and nightly radio dispatches.
Returning to Atlanta with a deeper understanding of the river, they collaborated with sculptor Julia Hill to create installations along tributaries in three City of Atlanta parks to bring people into closer relationship with the waters that run through their neighborhoods.
Designed to foster awareness of the South River, the installations offered opportunities for recreation and reflection, and incorporated elements of the watershed’s collective portrait that emerged from the river journey.
