SUMMARY:goo\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:A one-hour solo performance both scripted and improvised\, goo is an offering to you: an attempt to engage with family archives hilariously plays out as Yun Lee fails to connect to the contents of a book written by their grandmother Yeon-Ok Kim. goo channels tangential affective and linguistic impulses that spiral out of oral histories\, incomplete memories\, sensations both felt\, imagined\, and made up. It brings out the vulnerable side of family history of migration\, separation\, and alienation. There’s plenty of longing\, feeling of loss\, explosion of anger\, reaching through incomprehension. There’s love\, excavated in the process of making the work\, the kind that permeates three generations despite the trauma and forgetting— \nYun Lee (she/they) is a performer and choreographer from Seoul. Since training and dancing with Trust Dance Theatre\, Lee has been making performances that interweave fragments of family history\, cultural heritage\, and archival text\, processing and reimagining the material with feeling bodies through a postcolonial\, queer\, feminist lens. Lee’s work in dance\, physical theater\, and video led them to work with Young-Cool Park and Jang Sumi upon graduating from Yonsei University with a degree in Comparative Literature. In 2023\, Lee received a scholarship to participate in danceWEB in the frame of ImpulsTanz Festival. Since then\, they have relocated to the US as an MFA candidate and teaching fellow at Smith College. In 2025\, they will present work at Movement Research at Judson Church\, School of Contemporary Dance and Thought in Northampton\, and What’s a Dancework in Seoul.

SUMMARY:I’m sorry for your loss
DESCRIPTION:I’m sorry for your loss\, a movement memoir is a contemporary dance work exploring grief\, loss\, and care. Through deeply personal storytelling and embodied movement\, the piece reflects on how we hold\, process\, and share grief in the body and in relationship with others. It examines ancestral relationships and the passage of time as pathways to healing\, inviting audiences to consider how remembrance and community can transform our experiences of loss. This work premiered in March 2024 at Beacon Dance’s Moving Bodies/ Moving Hearts/ Moving Minds. The original creation was supported in part by Beacon Dance\, Rise City Dance\, Alternate ROOTS\, Mellon Foundation\, and Ford Foundation. \nCatching Mangoes Dance (CMD) shares and uplifts diverse stories through dance to engage audiences in meaningful discourse. CMD makes space for the hyphenated American\, immigrant and multicultural experiences\, celebrates the culture and explores our intersectional identities. CMD connects audiences through kapwa\, cultural exchange and historical education. The dancers for the performance on 3/15 are Madison Lee and Hiroko Kelly. \nJacque Pritz is an Atlanta-based dance artist\, community engagement specialist\, and project manager. As the founder of Catching Mangoes Dance\, she creates autoethnographic works that explore culture\, identity\, and her experiences as a Filipino-American woman\, fostering connection through the spirit of kapwa. A 2022 South Arts National Leaders of Color fellow\, Jacque has been recognized through residencies and commissions\, with her work presented along the East Coast. Outside of her artistic practice\, she enjoys traveling\, spending quality time with loved ones\, and taking long walks outside. \nHiroko Kelly (she/her) is a second generation Japanese American emerging choreographer\, moving artist\, and researcher\, whose work reflects the intangible truth of intergenerational connectivity rooted in Eastern philosophy. In 2017 she received her BA in Dance from Kennesaw State University and in 2023 she received her MA in Urban and Public Affairs from the University of San Francisco. She was a 2024 Dance USA Institute for Leadership Training Mentee and an awarded choreographer for the 2024 Dance Canvas-Atlanta Contemporary Summer Choreographic Residency. \nMadison Lee (any pronouns) is a queer\, Korean American dance artist based in Atlanta\, GA. They graduated from Emory University in 2024 with degrees in Dance and Marketing. There they were awarded Highest Honors for their dance thesis\, fellowship in the John H. Gordon Stipe Society\, and The Pioneer Award. Originally from Dallas\, Texas\, Madison trained intensively in hip hop and other styles and has performed with the Dallas Cowboys and Royal Caribbean Cruises. After coming to Atlanta\, they began training in contemporary/modern techniques\, and they have presented multiple works throughout their time at Emory and locally in Atlanta. Currently\, Madison is a company member with staibdance\, Catching Mangoes Dance\, led by Jacquelyn Pritz\, and Excavate Body\, led by Jacqui Hinkson. Outside of company work\, they have had the opportunity to work with choreographers such as Graham Shelor\, Leo Briggs\, Julio Medina\, George Staib\, Annalee Traylor\, Xan Burley\, and Alex Springer. \n

The project seeks to reconnect us to nature and to encourage us to find solutions to safeguard and nurture our environment. \nPerformances will take place on Sat. Oct. 19 and Sun\, Oct. 20 at 2:30pm and 5pm.  At 1pm and 3:30pm (before each performance) community activities will\, among other things\, offer audience members an opportunity to make musical instruments from natural materials. \nACCESSIBILITY\nThis performance takes place in a riverside forest that is part of the National Park Service (NPS)\, and the site can have varying terrain.  NPS has made every effort to make the location ADA Accessible\, including parking\, primary paths\, and restrooms.   \nThe performance takes place in three movements at different sites around the island\, and the audience follows the musicians from one to the next.  Of the three sites\, the first location is the most challenging as it is not on a primary path\, and changes to the terrain during Hurricane Helene have impacted the viewing areas. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT \nAbout the Artists \nArtist Sue Schroeder has choreographed the movements of Braiding Time\, Memory and Water through the site at Powers Island.  Schroeder is a choreographer and founding artistic director of Core Dance in Decatur.  In over 40 years of work in the arts\, Schroeder has created more than 110 original dance works for theaters\, museums\, green spaces\, architectural works\, and water environments.  Her work has appeared throughout the United States\, as well as Mexico\, Israel\, France\, Germany\, Poland\, Georgia\, Slovenia\, Czech Republic\, Iceland\, United Kingdom\, Sweden\, Canada\, Guatemala\, and Hungary. \nArtist and experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats employs multidisciplinary art projects to explore some of the most pressing issues of our time.  Braiding Time\, Memory and Water is one of a series of global projects through which Keats seeks to reconnect us to nature as the ultimate timekeeper.  Keats has exhibited art and lectured at dozens of institutions worldwide\, from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to Stanford University to the Triennale di Milano\, and from SXSW to CERN to UNESCO. \nComposure Felipe Pérez Santiago has written an original score that will be performed by professors and graduate students of Georgia State University.  From Mexico City\, Santiago is one of the most active and recognized composers on the international music scene.  His music has been commissioned and performed in more than 40 countries in some of the most important theaters\, concert halls\, venues\, and festivals. \nMore information can be found on the project page. \nPhoto by Simon Gentry

SUMMARY:Braiding Time\, Memory and Water
DESCRIPTION:Braiding Time\, Memory and Water is a collaboration between choreographer Sue Schroeder\, conceptual artist Jonathon Keats\, and composer Felipe Pérez Santiago.  Responding to the geography\, history\, and environmental concerns of rivers\, the inaugural performance will take place on Powers Island\, one of the most serene sections of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.  Performances by dancers and musicians will be prompted by the river’s natural flow\, enlisting the river as a participant. Audience members will be invited to join by playing instruments made from natural materials. The project seeks to reconnect us to nature and to encourage us to find solutions to safeguard and nurture our environment. \nPerformances will take place on Sat.
