SUMMARY:Promontory XV
DESCRIPTION:by Hormuz Minina \nThe chasm @ Fourth Ward Offices\, Tower 2 \nPromontory XV is a site-specific\, public art performance by multimedia artist Hormuz Minina to take place in a hidden chasm off the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail\, adjacent to the parking deck of the Fourth Ward Offices. The live performance will explore the intersection between nature and urban development. \nCrowned by a majestic oak tree\, the enormous ravine and its retaining wall will be the dramatic backdrop to a live performance incorporating large-scale projections\, an immersive soundscape featuring American soprano Jasmine Habersham\, and durational choreography designed to highlight the liminal space between the BeltLine’s development and the surrounding nature that remains. Other featured musical artists include Turkish-American sound artist and pianist Ipek Eginli\, trumpeter and 4th Ward AfroKlezmer Orchestra founder Roger Ruzow\, classical violinist Brijené Wilson\, and experimental sound designer Stan Woodard. \nPromontory XV is also a dialogue with Minina’s memorable 2010 durational performance at the same site prior to the BeltLine’s development. After digging a hole\, Minina painted himself in gold and embedded himself among the tree’s roots\, remaining there overnight. In an exploration of ritual\, nature\, and the boundaries of physical and psychological endurance\, Minina adopted the role of protector\, provocateur\, and advocate for creative humanism. Miraculously\, the oak tree still stands today\, serving as the inspiration for the upcoming performance. \nPresenting a creative vision for the future of Atlanta\, this event is produced by Benita Carr\, with the collaboration of Flux Projects\, Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery\, and New City Properties. \nmore info \nAbout the Artist \nHormuz Minina is a multimedia performance artist known for his durational\, site-specific works that blend improvisation with physical and mental endurance. Born in Mumbai\, Minina studied electrical engineering at Georgia Tech and participated in activities at WREK 91.1FM and the local experimental art\, film\, and music scenes. These experiences led to his involvement in the arts community as board chair of Eyedrum and as a supporter of cutting-edge art. \nHis performances are influenced by his experience as an immigrant and as a member of the Zoroastrian religious community\, represented symbolically as a winged spirit.  His work explores themes of spirituality\, alienation\, and environmental loss. \nAbout Benita Carr\, producer \nBenita Carr is a producer\, artist\, and former university arts educator dedicated to innovative storytelling and production methods. Her work subverts cultural norms exploring themes around domesticity and the family\, identity\, sexuality\, and the female body. She is known for producing site-specific photography and multimedia video installations in off-beat locations including a former slaughterhouse\, a 48’ shipping container and a 100-foot water tower located in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward. \nCarr’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums\, and public art forums around the country including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington\, DC and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including the Joyce Elaine Grant Award\, Texas Women’s University\, Artist in Communities Initiative Grant\, Fulton County Arts Council and Finalist\, Emerging Artist Award\, Ansel Adams Center for Photography\, San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Braiding Time\, Memory and Water
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Flux Projects in collaboration with Core Dance \n\n\nBraiding Time\, Memory and Water is a site-specific interactive dance performance by Sue Schroeder of Core Dance in collaboration with conceptual artist Jonathon Keats and composer Felipe Pérez Santiago. The performance responds to the geography and history of the site and encourages us to reconnect with our natural environment. \nAlongside the creek in Tanyard Creek Park\, Braiding Time\, Memory and Water will unfold in three movements. With each movement a water clock will measure the rate of flow of the water\, and its speed will determine the pace of the performance\, thus enlisting the water as a natural timekeeper and a collaborator in the performance. Ambient sounds integrated into a larger sound composition will further nature’s collaboration in the work. \nLocal and international dancers with Core Dance will be joined by musicians from Bent Frequency and the Georgia State University Percussion Ensemble. More on the artists here. \n\nAbout the Artists \nTo further engagement with the natural environment\, community activities for all ages will take place prior to each performance. \nAbout the Community Art Activities \n\nDaily Schedule\n1pm Community Art Activities\n2pm Performance\n3pm Community Art Activities\n4pm Performance \nmap + directions \nPhoto by John Ramspott

SUMMARY:Braiding Time\, Memory and Water
DESCRIPTION:Braiding Time\, Memory and Water is a collaboration between choreographer Sue Schroeder\, conceptual artist Jonathon Keats\, and composer Felipe Pérez Santiago.  Responding to the geography\, history\, and environmental concerns of rivers\, the inaugural performance will take place on Powers Island\, one of the most serene sections of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.  Performances by dancers and musicians will be prompted by the river’s natural flow\, enlisting the river as a participant. Audience members will be invited to join by playing instruments made from natural materials. The project seeks to reconnect us to nature and to encourage us to find solutions to safeguard and nurture our environment. \nPerformances will take place on Sat. Oct. 19 and Sun\, Oct. 20 at 2:30pm and 5pm.  At 1pm and 3:30pm (before each performance) community activities will\, among other things\, offer audience members an opportunity to make musical instruments from natural materials. \nACCESSIBILITY\nThis performance takes place in a riverside forest that is part of the National Park Service (NPS)\, and the site can have varying terrain.  NPS has made every effort to make the location ADA Accessible\, including parking\, primary paths\, and restrooms.   \nThe performance takes place in three movements at different sites around the island\, and the audience follows the musicians from one to the next.  Of the three sites\, the first location is the most challenging as it is not on a primary path\, and changes to the terrain during Hurricane Helene have impacted the viewing areas. \n  \nREGISTER FOR EVENT \nAbout the Artists \nArtist Sue Schroeder has choreographed the movements of Braiding Time\, Memory and Water through the site at Powers Island.  Schroeder is a choreographer and founding artistic director of Core Dance in Decatur.  In over 40 years of work in the arts\, Schroeder has created more than 110 original dance works for theaters\, museums\, green spaces\, architectural works\, and water environments.  Her work has appeared throughout the United States\, as well as Mexico\, Israel\, France\, Germany\, Poland\, Georgia\, Slovenia\, Czech Republic\, Iceland\, United Kingdom\, Sweden\, Canada\, Guatemala\, and Hungary. \nArtist and experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats employs multidisciplinary art projects to explore some of the most pressing issues of our time.  Braiding Time\, Memory and Water is one of a series of global projects through which Keats seeks to reconnect us to nature as the ultimate timekeeper.  Keats has exhibited art and lectured at dozens of institutions worldwide\, from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to Stanford University to the Triennale di Milano\, and from SXSW to CERN to UNESCO. \nComposure Felipe Pérez Santiago has written an original score that will be performed by professors and graduate students of Georgia State University.  From Mexico City\, Santiago is one of the most active and recognized composers on the international music scene.  His music has been commissioned and performed in more than 40 countries in some of the most important theaters\, concert halls\, venues\, and festivals. \nMore information can be found on the project page. \nPhoto by Simon Gentry

\n  \nREGISTER FOR EVENT \n\nAbout the Artists \n Artist Sue Schroeder has choreographed the movements of Braiding Time\, Memory and Water through the site at Powers Island.

DESCRIPTION:Atlanta duo Duet for Theremin and Lapsteel perform with Otherpole as part of Turbulence. \n“Adventurous duo creates ethereal soundscapes. Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel are on an odyssey born of a love for non-fixed pitch improvisation.” Creative Loafing \n“The name of this Atlanta duo implies a proper classical recital\, a rigid formality. But Scott Burland (theremin) and Frank Schultz (lap steel) don’t do scripted\, improvising not so much distinct sounds as evolving eddies of sound\, vapors of tones that develop and transform gracefully. Hypnotic pulses and dreamy drones weave together to form a kaleidoscope of sounds and moods\, ambient clouds and swooning collages that are as much about texture as they are timbre\, like a long-lost soundtrack to a deep-sea documentary.” P. SUMMARY:Unsilent Night
DESCRIPTION:PERFORMING UNSILENT NIGHT\, A 21ST CENTURY WAY OF CAROLING\nBent Frequency\, Priscilla Smith Productions and Flux Projects present Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night. This is a musical concert where the whole family can participate. We’ll stroll through the historic West End neighborhood with your boomboxes and smart phones (with Bluetooth or battery-operated speakers) playing Phil Kline’s luminous soundscape\, creating a beautiful experience you’ll never forget. No music experience is necessary\, and people of all ages are invited to join or watch the walk. You do not have to carry a music playing device to join the stroll. \nWe’ll gather beforehand at Gallery 992\, where you can purchase a coffee or adult beverage\, then “perform” as we fill the streets of the West End with the four parts of Phil Kline’s work\, Unsilent Night. Our route will be a loop\, bringing us back to Gallery 992. \nStick around for Sunday Night Jazz beginning around 9\, followed by an open jam. All events are free and open to the public. \nHOW TO PARTICIPATE\nIf you’re interested in performing Unsilent Night sure to REGISTER FOR THE EVENT so we’ll be prepared. Then choose your “instrument” and download the appropriate track: all details and tracks here. \nEveryone who wants to participate as a “musician” needs to bring speakers or amplification of some kind. \n+ Battery-powered speakers that plug into your smartphone — using the free Unsilent Night app. Be sure to download the app using wi-fi before the event. It is too large to download via data connection. \n+ OR you can bring a boombox powered by batteries and play a cassette tape or CD the organizers will provide. \nPlease do not plan to play the audio on the built-in speakers of a laptop\, smartphone\, or tablet. These devices aren’t loud enough and the sound is distorted. Please don’t plan on streaming your track from the web; coverage may be spotty and your “performance” will suffer. \nFriends and family who want to walk along without speakers are welcome! You don’t have to “play” to participate\, but the more “instruments” the better we’ll sound. We’ll publicize the route\, so folks can look for us along the way to hear us and see us. \nFor extra fun\, bring glo-sticks\, glo jewelry\, small flashlights\, LED tealights\, glow-in-the-dark clothing. Let’s make a visual experience to go along with our audio world! \nArrive at Gallery 992 by 6:30 pm on Sunday\, December 16th! \nregister for unsilent night

No music experience is necessary\, and people of all ages are invited to join or watch the walk. You do not have to carry a music playing device to join the stroll. \nWe’ll gather beforehand at Monday Night Brewing Garage where you can purchase one of their fine craft brews or a non-alcoholic\, house-made ginger ale (a portion of the proceeds will benefit the project)\, then “perform” as we fill the streets with the four parts of Phil Kline’s composition. We’ll start and end at Monday Night Brewing’s Garage\, walking for 45 minutes — the length of the composition — in a loop through the neighborhood\, finishing where we started. \nThere is plenty of parking at Monday Night Garage. For GPS location use 1003 White Street\, Atlanta 30310. \nHOW TO PARTICIPATE\nMake sure to FILL OUT THE REGISTRATION FORM so we’ll be prepared. Please don’t plan on livestreaming your track. Coverage may be spotty and your “performance” will suffer. \nFriends and family who want to walk along without speakers are welcome! You don’t have to “play” to participate\, but the more “instruments”\, the better we’ll sound. \nfacebook event
