SUMMARY:Projection of Between You and Me
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Atlanta Downtown\, Micah and Whitney Stansell will project a version of Between You and Me onto the exterior of Pullman Yards during the Opening Evening of the Atlanta Art Fair. \nThis will be the launch of Atlanta Downtown’s new MAP Rover.  A public art projection program on wheels\, the MAP Rover will illuminate city buildings and unexpected places with digital artwork\, film\, and photography.  The MAP Rover is the latest addition to Atlanta Downtown’s Art and Activation program\, which works to enhance the cultural identity\, vibrancy\, and inclusivity of Downtown Atlanta by activating public spaces and fostering a sustainable creative ecosystem. \nFlux Projects is excited to be partnering with Atlanta Downtown to bring an exterior element to this year’s Atlanta Art Fair.

SUMMARY:Braiding Time\, Memory and Water
DESCRIPTION:Braiding Time\, Memory and Water is a collaboration between choreographer Sue Schroeder\, conceptual artist Jonathon Keats\, and composer Felipe Pérez Santiago.  Responding to the geography\, history\, and environmental concerns of rivers\, the inaugural performance will take place on Powers Island\, one of the most serene sections of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.  Performances by dancers and musicians will be prompted by the river’s natural flow\, enlisting the river as a participant. Audience members will be invited to join by playing instruments made from natural materials. The project seeks to reconnect us to nature and to encourage us to find solutions to safeguard and nurture our environment. \nPerformances will take place on Sat. Oct. 19 and Sun\, Oct. 20 at 2:30pm and 5pm.  At 1pm and 3:30pm (before each performance) community activities will\, among other things\, offer audience members an opportunity to make musical instruments from natural materials. \nACCESSIBILITY\nThis performance takes place in a riverside forest that is part of the National Park Service (NPS)\, and the site can have varying terrain.  NPS has made every effort to make the location ADA Accessible\, including parking\, primary paths\, and restrooms.   \nThe performance takes place in three movements at different sites around the island\, and the audience follows the musicians from one to the next.  Of the three sites\, the first location is the most challenging as it is not on a primary path\, and changes to the terrain during Hurricane Helene have impacted the viewing areas. \n  \nREGISTER FOR EVENT \nAbout the Artists \nArtist Sue Schroeder has choreographed the movements of Braiding Time\, Memory and Water through the site at Powers Island.  Schroeder is a choreographer and founding artistic director of Core Dance in Decatur.  In over 40 years of work in the arts\, Schroeder has created more than 110 original dance works for theaters\, museums\, green spaces\, architectural works\, and water environments.  Her work has appeared throughout the United States\, as well as Mexico\, Israel\, France\, Germany\, Poland\, Georgia\, Slovenia\, Czech Republic\, Iceland\, United Kingdom\, Sweden\, Canada\, Guatemala\, and Hungary. \nArtist and experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats employs multidisciplinary art projects to explore some of the most pressing issues of our time.  Braiding Time\, Memory and Water is one of a series of global projects through which Keats seeks to reconnect us to nature as the ultimate timekeeper.  Keats has exhibited art and lectured at dozens of institutions worldwide\, from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to Stanford University to the Triennale di Milano\, and from SXSW to CERN to UNESCO. \nComposure Felipe Pérez Santiago has written an original score that will be performed by professors and graduate students of Georgia State University.  From Mexico City\, Santiago is one of the most active and recognized composers on the international music scene.  His music has been commissioned and performed in more than 40 countries in some of the most important theaters\, concert halls\, venues\, and festivals. \nMore information can be found on the project page. \nPhoto by Simon Gentry

SUMMARY:Gyun Hur at the Atlanta Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:Flux Projects will present Their tears now yours washing over where it aches\, an immersive installation by Gyun Hur created especially for the inaugural Atlanta Art Fair. Hur’s handblown\, tear-shaped glass vessels are suspended from the ceiling and hold creek water collected near Pullman Yards. On the floor below\, a layered photo montage traces personal and collective histories. SUMMARY:Atlanta to the Atlantic: Opening at Perkerson Park
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta to the Atlantic returns to Atlanta for installations in three City of Atlanta Parks through which tributaries of the South River flow.  The first will open in Perkerson Park on Saturday\, September 21. \nMeet the Artists 10am to noon\nComments at 10:30am \nmap + direction to parking \nSound Bath Meditation with Ebony Black \nThe event will include a sound bath meditation led by Ebony Black. This immersive outdoor sound bath meditation will guide participants to connect deeply with the powerful presence of water. As healing sounds wash over them\, they will feel the rhythm of nature mirroring the flow of rivers\, lakes\, and oceans. The journey invites participants to connect with the water within and the sounds of flowing water in the park\, bridging their connection to the waters that flow throughout Georgia. The natural environment and sound will bring participants into a deeper harmony with this vital element. \nAbout Ebony Black\nEbony Black is a certified sound healing practitioner\, behavioral health specialist\, and holds a background in marriage and family therapy. As the founder of The Feelings Garden Wellness\, Ebony blends her expertise in mental health\, mindfulness meditation\, holistic living\, journaling\, and sound healing to guide individuals on their journey to vibrant health\, inner harmony and actionable steps towards change. She encourages the daily practice of the “power of pause\,” a mindful moment to notice and connect with your emotions through the lens of grace. With a focus on personalized nourishing support\, she empowers clients to awaken their fullest potential and embrace holistic well-being. \nMore about Atlanta to the Atlantic can be found on the project page. \nACCESSIBILITY \nPerkerson Park has varying terrain\, including some slopes and exposed tree roots.  We recommend accessing this event as follows: \n\nFrom the parking lot designated in the link above\, rather than take the ramp across the bridge to the pavilions\, follow the worn path behind the restrooms along the other side of the creek.  After a short incline at the beginning\, the area is flat\, with short grass and dirt but without roots.\nAt the project site\, there is another short incline\, this time dirt and with some roots\, but they do not cover the entire area.\n\nOur gatherings will be at this site\, which seems to be the favorite spot for park-goers to enjoy the creek. \nThe alternate path from the parking lot\, which takes you beside the pavilions\, leads to the top of the project and has a beautiful view looking downstream.  There is a bridge with steps over the creek from this location to the one referenced above. \nPlease contact us with questions at info@fluxprojects.org or (404) 245-5853.

SUMMARY:Atlanta to the Atlantic Installations
DESCRIPTION:For phase two of their project Atlanta to the Atlantic\, artists Rachel Parish and Sarah Cameron Sunde will collaborate with Julia Hill to build installations in three Atlanta parks through which tributaries of the South River flow.  Opening Sept. 21 in Perkerson Park\, to be followed by Arthur Langford\, Jr. Park and Kirkwood Urban Forest\, the installations will highlight the presence of the waterway\, offer opportunities for recreation and reflection\, and incorporate elements of the collective portrait of the watershed that emerged along the journey. \nInstallations are open daily during daylight hours. \nA collaboration with the South River Watershed Alliance\, Atlanta to the Atlantic aims to foster awareness of the South River and its environmental health by bringing people into closer relationship with its waters that run through their neighborhoods. \nSupport \nThis project is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Georgia Council for the Arts. \nAdditional information can be found on the project page.

SUMMARY:Meet the Artist: Rachel Parish
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 2\, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM\, artist Rachel Parish will be on site to greet audience members and answer questions at Georgia Plaza Park\, one of four downtown locations for her work Emergence. \nWith this work\, Parish will present a series of temporary\, interconnected monuments to the four spring heads that lie directly beneath Downtown Atlanta and feed the region’s vital\, life-sustaining rivers and creeks. By illuminating the “birthplaces” of Atlanta’s waterways\, Emergence will offer the public the opportunity to collectively consider the power of the natural ecology upon which Atlanta has been built and the continued presence of the life-springs that support the land upon which the city’s residents live their lives. Artist Sarah Cameron Sunde stands in a tidal area for a full cycle (usually 12-13 hours) as water engulfs her body and then reveals it again.  The public is invited to participate by joining Sarah in the water and by marking the passing hours from the shore; the local community is involved in all aspects of creating the work. \nThe performance on September 14 will be the culminating work for the 36.5 series.  A large-scale global event\, hundreds of people will stand in the water in NYC while re-enactments happen in all previous locations around the world.  Designed to engage people in conversations around sea-level rise\, the project began in Maine 2013 as a response to Hurricane Sandy’s impact on New York City.  The hope is that each individual that encounters 36.5 will consider their contemporary relationship to water\, as individuals\, in community\, and as a civilization. \nMore information: https://www.36pt5.org/ \nThis livestream event will introduce Sarah as the next artist in our Flux Exchange\, an incubator series that invites artists to explore the city of Atlanta as a site for a future large-scale public project. \nDirections + Parking \nPeachtree Fountains Plaza is located at Underground  across from the 5 Points MARTA station and bordered by Wall St\, Pryor St\, Peachtree St\, and “Upper Alabama.”  It is under the Peach Drop tower\, for those who know the New Year’s Eve tradition.  In addition to MARTA\, we recommend biking or rideshare. Street parking and parking lots are located in the immediate vicinity on the surrounding streets. \nAbout Sarah Cameron Sunde  \nA New York-based interdisciplinary artist and director\, Sarah Cameron Sunde works with performance\, video\, and public art.  She was recently awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to complete her ongoing series of works\, 36.5/A Durational Performance with the Sea (2013 – present\, nine works on six continents).  In 2017\, Sunde instigated and co-founded Works on Water\, an artist-driven experimental organization dedicated to art that is made on/in/with bodies of water. \nHer work has been seen and experienced at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art\, 3LD Art & Technology Center\, the Knockdown Center\, EFA Project Space\, Little Island\, Rattlestick\, Kennedy Center\, Guthrie Theater and presented internationally in Norway\, the Netherlands\, Bangladesh\, Brazil\, Mexico\, China\, Uganda\, and Iraqi Kurdistan. SUMMARY:Remembrance as Resistance: Preserving Black Narratives
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 19\, in commemoration of Juneteenth\, Flux Projects will present Charmaine Minniefield’s Remembrance as Resistance: Preserving Black Narratives\, honoring the unmarked graves in Oakland’s historic African American Burial Grounds. \nThrough this project\, Minniefield celebrates the Ring Shout\, a traditional African American worship and gathering practice\, whose origins in West African ritual and ceremony predate slavery. Minniefield explores evidence of its survival in contemporary dance\, music\, and spoken word as a testament to the resilience of a people. \nVisitors to Oakland’s African American Burial Grounds can examine a replica of a Praise House\, a small wooden structure used for worship. The Praise House will include a multimedia installation of the Ring Shout with video projections on the interior of the building and a sound installation emanating from the structure over the newly restored section of the Cemetery. \nReserve your viewing time \nA limited number of people will be admitted into the Praise House at a time\, and masks will be required for entry. Check back soon for details. \nAbout Charmaine Minniefield  \nThe work of artist-activist Charmaine Minniefield preserves Black narratives as a radical act of social justice. Firmly rooted in womanist social theory and ancestral veneration\, her work draws from indigenous traditions as seen throughout Africa and the Diaspora\, to explore African and African-American history\, memory and ritual as an intentional push back against erasure. Her creative practice is community-based as her research and resulting bodies of work often draw from physical archives as she excavates the stories of African-American women-led resistance\, spirituality and power. \nMinniefield’s recent public works\, which include projection mapping and site-specific installation\, insight dialogue around race\, class and power. Through interdisciplinary collaboration\, she incorporates other art forms to virtually bridge the past to the present. Minniefield recently returned to Atlanta after her unexpected and self-initiated artist residency in The Gambia\, where due to COVID she was forced to remain for over eight months. She used this time to explore the origins of her cultural identity and the Ring Shout. \nMinniefield’s work is featured in a number of public and private collections\, and as a muralist\, her walls can be seen throughout the City of Atlanta and beyond. She was honored by Mercedes Benz as a part of their Greatness Lives Here campaign. She and her recent mural in Brooklyn\, depicting women who shaped the future\, is featured in the 2020 US Census commercial. Minniefield recently served as the Stuart A. Rose Library artist-in-residence at Emory through a collaboration with Flux Projects.
