In conjunction with our project Atlanta to the Atlantic, Flux Projects will join Trees Atlanta for a tour of Kirkwood and the Kirkwood Urban Forest.

Discover notable historical and horticultural stories of Kirkwood and explore an urban forest preserve right here in Atlanta. Kirkwood is a historic neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta, Georgia that has seen many changes and challenges over the years. This thriving community is home to various community members and organizations that promote and improve the quality of life for its residents. Trees Atlanta has played an active role in planting and caring for Kirkwood’s trees over the years, and you will see evidence of this work during the tour. Learn how you can get involved in planting and pruning trees as well as removing invasive species in greenspaces across Atlanta. Our docent has volunteered with Trees Atlanta in the Kirkwood neighborhood to help increase and improve the urban canopy.

Atlanta to the Atlantic will be on view in Kirkwood Urban Forest September 28 – November 3. A collaboration with the South River Watershed Alliance, this project brings awareness to the South River and its tributaries which originate and flow through south Atlanta neighborhoods, including Kirkwood.   The tree canopy is important for protecting these tributaries by supporting bank stabilization, controlling erosion, serving as home to animals, and providing a welcoming environment for us to be in proximity to the water. As a headwater to the largest freshwater system in Georgia, the South River impacts the health of state waters from Atlanta all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

About the Tour Guide: Lenette has lived in Atlanta off and on since 2001. The first thing she noticed when she arrived, was the amazing tree canopy. She moved to Kirkwood in 2021 and enjoys exploring the neighborhood with her two dogs. Lenette has been a dedicated Trees Atlanta volunteer since 2023 and has volunteered on several projects in Kirkwood. The forest is her happy place.
