As open fields and forests are paved over, fireflies have been disappearing from America’s summer skies. The loss of fireflies is only one indicator of the effects of human development on the natural world. This work is intended to help remind us what we deprive ourselves of in the name of progress.

It may be ironic to note that one theory as to the decline of fireflies relates to the increase of artificial light in their habitats; human light pollution may serve to interrupt firefly communication and mating habits.
