An immersive spatial sonic environment for The Shed
Turbulence is a multi-channel sound environment turning The Shed into an immersive spatial sonic environment, exploring the superposition of environments – natural and industrial, real and simulated, present and past. Virtual flocks of sound fly the length of The Shed, interacting, and hybridizing with the past and present industrial and human soundscapes of Ponce City Market and the BeltLine. Audience members will be able to drive the flocks of sound through space, as well as hear select electronic music performers perform within the space.
About the Artists
Kai Riedl and Éric Marty collaborate artistically as Otherpole, a creative research collective working at the intersection of visual art, sound, and technology.
Kai Riedl (Macha) made multiple trips to Java, Indonesia to record hundreds of tracks of traditional music, and then remixed, reimagined and mash those recordings with synths, bleeps and bloops, drum machines and more. With many of their friends in Athens, Ga. and beyond, they’ve made a set of all of it and have an ethno futuristic dance gaze party where we can pretend none of us will ever die. Kai will be joined by Vivek Boray who will be contributing field recordings recorded on the streets of India.
Éric Marty is a composer and media artist working in interactive design and hybrid forms. Drawing on cognition and natural systems, he creates surreal responsive environments that explore the hybridization of soundscapes and the transubstantiation of architecture. His honors include the Canada Council for the Arts’ Stauffer Prize, the ALEA III International Composition Prize, awards from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, ASCAP, SOCAN, and fellowships at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart and the Fondation Camargo near Marseilles. Éric is also a data visualization researcher with the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology and Center for the Ecology of Infectious Diseases, as well as Digital Arts Fellow at UGA’s Willson Center for the Humanities and Arts. Éric studied at the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) at the University of California at Berkeley, and holds a PhD in Composition and Computer Music. He co-founded the Slingshot festival of music, electronic art and tech in Athens, Georgia.
